Strengths: Appear to have played a strong political game, although suggestions of ‘vote-trading’ with Spain-Portugal have been denied and remain unproven. The World Cup has never been staged in an Arab country, while the relatively compact nature of Qatar would allow fans to watch more than one match in a day. Qatar has also unveiled plans for modular stadiums that would be dismantled and taken to countries with poor football infrastructure.
Weaknesses: The desert heat remains a serious problem, with the average daytime temperature in Qatar over 40C. The Qatar bid team believe this can be solved by a radical cooling mechanism inside the stadiums, although it has not been tested in actual conditions. Every stadium still also has to be built.
